Heather's guide to making a hooky rug

Preparing the materials
Cut the fabric into thin strips using a cutting board, perspex ruler and a rotary wheel.

How to hook
Use a hook tool to weave your fabric onto the hessian backing. Working from the 'finished' side, hook the fabric upwards to form loops. Always allow a 4" border for finishing purposes.

Using a lap frame
Rug hooking is much easier with a lap frame. Edge grippers hold the hessian firmly, providing better tension.

Designing a rug
Stuck for ideas? Why not copy a photograph of your favourite view or pet. Use a felt tip pen and dressmaking net to transfer the details to the hessian backing.
